Lasbat Mojisola Takes Over as Lagos Assembly Removes Obasa

In a shocking move, the Lagos State House of Assembly has ousted its Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, and elected Hon. Lasbat Mojisola Meranda as his replacement.

This dramatic shift in leadership comes after months of tension between Obasa and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, which ultimately led to Obasa's removal.

Meranda, who previously served as Deputy Speaker, brings a wealth of experience to her new role. Born on August 16, 1980, in Lagos State, she attended Randle Primary School and Lagos Anglican Girls Grammar School before pursuing higher education at Lagos State University.

Her professional background spans various fields, including procurement management and local government administration.

As a seasoned politician, Meranda has held several key positions, including Senior Special Assistant at Apapa Local Government and Supervisor for Health.

She has been a member of the Lagos State House of Assembly since 2015, representing Apapa Constituency I.

The controversy surrounding Obasa's leadership was fueled by allegations of financial mismanagement and abuse of power.

His impeachment was seen as a necessary step to restore transparency and accountability in the House.

In addition to Meranda's election as Speaker, Hon. Fatai Mojeed was chosen as the new Deputy Speaker. Mojeed, who represents Ibeju Lekki Constituency I, has been an active member of the Assembly since 2023.

The Lagos State House of Assembly is composed of 40 legislators elected to represent the people of Lagos State. Established in 1979.
